Frankincense or Oliban is a variety of incense. Mystical and aromatic, this gum-resin is extracted by section of a small tree, the Boswellia carterii, cultivated mainly in the North and East Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Yemen) and the Middle East (Oman). The sun dry the tree tears exposed and become gums.

It is also a pure essential oil after an extraction by water vapour distillation (spicy notes) or volatile solvents (oriental accords).

The Gospel of Matthew Extract

In The Pilgrimage of the Magi, a group of divin nomads named The Three Wise Men, Melchior the Persian, Caspar, king of India, and the Babylonian Balthazar, visited Jesus after his birth. They bear symbolic gifting riches of their earth: gold, frankincense and myrrh.

7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and learned from them the exact time the star had appeared.8And sending them to Bethlehem, he said: “Go, search carefully for the Child, and when you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.”

9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stood over the place where the Child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with great delight. 11On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.

12And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew to their country by another route.

“The perfume of flowers goes not against the wind, not even the perfume of sandalwood, of rose-bay, or of the jasmine; but the perfume of virtues travel against the wind and reaches unto the ends of the world.”

South of Arabia, Earth of encense

Incense is the perfume ingredient with the most prestigious past. L’Arabie Heureuse or Arabia Felix and the legend of the Queen of Sheba reflect the sacred earth for fragrances, sacred resins, myrrhe, fruits of the incense trading. Used in the most religious rituals, the resin was the main raw material traded during the silk road thanks to bedouins, nomads and the caravans.

During the transcendant ritual Gnawa (lila derbeda), the initiated master musician called maâlem burns incense to call the saints by creating repeated instrumental songs and series of chants. The spirit appears, takes possession of a devoted dancer and develop ecstatic movements.

Used in fumigation in religious rituals since Ancient civilizations like Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, Hebrews, the holy resin creates profond mental and spiritual benefits. In link with the Earth Element, it developps the sense of communion and empathic connection. In latin, Perfumum “by the smoke” reveals the transcendance and the human connection with the spirits.
